The Stepfather opens up with a man covered in blood. After cleaning himself up and walking down the stairs the audience is introduced into the real cause of his appearance. Using a wide shot to capture his murdered family members, the dad calmly walks out the door, picks up the newspaper and whistles his way to his car. The film uses camera shots to keep the audience in suspense, looking for an answers or cause to the man's bloody appearance; then, subtly reveals the full effect of his carnage. The film grossed $2,488,740 dollars and won two awards and nominated for eight, winning the Cognac Festival du Film Policier for Critics Award.
